A hospital nurse who imported a Class A drug through the post on three different occasions has been jailed for six months.

Maripem Seguan (56) admitted importing methamphetamine, known colloquially as meth or crystal meth, in the Magistrate’s Court.

Legal adviser Luisa Stuart, prosecuting, said customs officers intercepted an envelope sent to Seguan on 21 January.

The package was found to contain almost a gram of methamphetamine.

An examination of his mobile phone later showed he had also received two other deliveries of the same substance.

Advocate Chris Baglin, defending, said the low quantities of the drug had been for Seguan’s personal use alone and that he had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

“The risk of reoffending is low,” he said.

Advocate Baglin added that Seguan could lose his accommodation and his right to work as a nurse as a result of the offence.

But Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu said that a jail sentence was unavoidable.

“One does not expect a nurse to be importing and taking a Class A drug,” he said.

“This was not a one-off importation. A non-custodial alternative does not apply.”
