Jersey’s competition watchdog has sent an open letter to veterinary businesses after a UK review found a lack of price transparency, barriers to consumer choice, and an outdated regulatory framework in the sector.
The Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority confirmed it was not suggesting that the same issues exist in Jersey, but said it will consider whether further review in the local market could be beneficial.
In the open letter, the regulator encouraged local vets to consider the findings of the UK Competition and Markets Authority’s investigation and make any appropriate improvements.
The review proposed that veterinary businesses should publish price lists and provide itemised bills for treatments, offer written estimates for treatments over a certain threshold, maintain a clear and accessible complaints procedure, inform pet owners about alternative options, and disclose ownership structures to avoid potential conflicts of interest.

“Our aim in sharing the Competition and Markets Authority’s findings is to encourage reflection and transparency, helping ensure the relationship between vets and pet owners remains positive and built on trust.
“Transparency around pricing and ownership helps consumers make informed choices and strengthens confidence in essential services like veterinary care.”
The Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority said it will continue to monitor developments and consider whether a further review of Jersey’s veterinary market could be beneficial.
