Evacuated residents from flats affected by a potential gas leak in the Springfield area have been offered hotel accommodation tonight as the investigation into the incident continues.

Firefighters remain on scene at Le Geyt Estate.

Andium and Island Energy have confirmed there is no gas supply in the affected building, but engineers are continuing their investigations to locate the leak in the mains pipework in the road.

A spokesperson for the utility company said the evacuation of residents was “precautionary”.

Islanders from the 21 affected Andium properties are being offered hotel accommodation tonight if they do not have anywhere else to go, according to an update issued by Government this evening.

Residents are also able to collect vital belongings from their properties, with the support of firefighters.

Earlier today, Island Energy said: “Island Energy engineers are currently working in the Le Geyt Estate area, responding to a potential gas escape.

“Our team follow a very strict policy and procedure in the event of a gas escape and, when called to attend, use highly sensitive gas detection equipment, and follow a thorough investigation process on all call outs.

“We monitor inside and outside properties within a wide radius to ensure safety.

“Working with Jersey Fire and Rescue, our engineers are currently on-site working to locate, and if found repair, any gas escape.

“The evacuation of homes and properties in the vicinity, in this case around 20 flats, is precautionary, and again is best practice in these situations.

“We would like to thank the residents of the area for their understanding and co-operation and reassure them we are doing everything possible to get them back into their homes as quickly and safely as possible.”

The Fire Service remains on scene and islanders are advised to avoid the area where possible.
