A Jersey nursery has confirmed that parents will be refunded for days when their children have been unable to attend due to staff shortages – and has said it is working on an “action plan” to ensure safe staffing levels are maintained.
Busy Bees Jersey Leeward nursery, based at Springfield, has come under fire on social media in recent days, with families reporting calls asking them to keep their children at home.
In a statement issued on Friday, the nursery said it had been “trying to manage a shortage of appropriately qualified team members” for some time.
The entire nursery was closed on Friday 25 July – the only full-day closure to date – and one room will remain shut for the next two weeks to allow for staff training and to meet required child-to-staff ratios.
A spokesperson from the nursery chain said: “Where we have been unable to provide a place for a child due to staff shortages, we will be providing a full refund for any days missed and will continue to update our families on the progress of our plan.”
The nursery added that additional team members had been brought in from the UK and that it was upskilling staff to “enhance their qualifications so they can take on a wider variety of roles.”
“Our intention is that the nursery will be fully open and business as usual on Monday 11th August,” the spokesperson added.
The Government said it was aware of the situation and that the Childcare and Early Years Service (CEYS) was “closely supporting the nursery”.
This includes providing staff training, in-house support to improve practice, and oversight to ensure compliance with staffing and care standards.
