Construction on a new skatepark at South Hill could begin next year after the Government confirmed it hopes to submit a planning application later this year.

While 2023 saw the opening of a new facility at at Les Quennevais, discussions around the need for a replacement town skatepark picked up pace following the closure of the site at New North Quay.

Efforts by previous governments to progress proposals for a skatepark at South Hill have struggled for a variety of reasons – including heritage concerns and changes in funding plans.

During a hearing of the Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel this morning, panel chair Deputy Hilary Jeune asked for an update on the project’s current timeline.

Ellen Littlechild, Group Director for Operations, Transport and Sport, said: “We’re still working on getting the planning application ready, which we hope will be submitted before the summer break.

“That’s where we are, with the idea that if it still moves ahead there will be construction in 2026.”
