The delivery of a new skatepark in St Helier is being “accelerated” and will be completed next year – with over half-a-million pounds set aside to fund the facility at Mount Bingham.

Released on Tuesday, the government’s Budget allocated £557,000 for the new skatepark at South Hill.

If approved by the States Assembly, the provision would be completed in 2026.

“The delivery of a new skatepark in St Helier is being accelerated in this Budget and will now complete in 2026,” it said.

Earlier this year, the government confirmed it hoped to submit a planning application for the new skatepark at South Hill before the end of 2025.

Discussions around the need for a replacement town skatepark picked up pace following the closure of the site at New North Quay at the end of 2023.

Efforts by previous governments to progress proposals for a skatepark at South Hill have struggled for a variety of reasons – including heritage concerns and changes in funding plans.

A £1.9m skate park was opened at Les Quennevais in February 2023 after years of campaigning.
