They believe the boy was attacked outside Robin Hood Takeaway on Union Street at around 17:45 by two other youths.
Police report that there were several other people in the area, including vehicles travelling past.
In particular, they are looking to speak with a woman driving a 4×4 who was shouted at by one of the youths.
