Robin Smith and Jasmine Le Lievre will be running the London Marathon on 26th April

After a lengthy career in law enforcement, Jersey police chief Robin Smith is used to chasing after criminals…

But, whether those chases will stand him in good stead for tackling 26.2 miles around London will be put to the test next month.

Mr Smith is set to take on the London Marathon on 26 April in aid of a local charity he cares deeply about – Brighter Futures.

Brighter Futures Jersey offers support for young people, parents, and families. They advocate strongly for early intervention to prevent crisis further down the line – and offer one to one support and a range of courses, all free of charge.

During a speech he made at the Brighter Futures conference on Tuesday 24 April at the Royal Yacht hotel, Robin explained the significance of the work they do in preventing youth crime and crisis before it develops.

He said: “150 families, broader future supports, giving parents the tools and confidence and stability to their children, the intervention at its best, preventing crisis before it escalates.

“So when people ask whether we can afford to invest in early intervention charities like Brighter Futures, my answer is simply, you can’t afford not to.”

A JustGiving page has been set up to donate ahead of the challenge – and the target of £2,300 is already 90%.

All money raised goes directly to Brighter Future, with donations going towards parent-child relationships, positive mental health and wellbeing, and second-chance learning programs.

Mr Smith’s JustGiving page can be found here.

He told Express: “Brighter Futures supports families facing some of life’s toughest moments, providing practical help, early intervention and long‑term support to ensure children are safe, cared for, and given the best possible chance to thrive.

“Their work often happens quietly, behind the scenes, but its impact on lives across our Island is profound. Jasmine and I are running for the fantastic BF team led by Fiona Brennan – their energy and enthusiasm is inspirational.”

Mr Smith explained that he has a personal reason for committing to this challenge for the charity – Ruth Brunton, the charity’s former CEO, was on the interview panel when he interviewed for his current role as Chief of Police.

He remembers her fondly and added that they remained friends following the interview.

“She was formidable, perceptive, and utterly fearless. Ruth was later diagnosed with motor neurone disease and retired to the USA to be with her family, where she sadly died.

“She was a force of nature and a passionate champion for Brighter Futures.”

Robin will be running alongside Jasmine Le Lievre, who will also be raising funds for the charity.

Jasmine’s JustGiving page can be found here – also with a target of £2,300.
