The publication of a report produced following an external review of the island’s neurology department has been delayed for a second time.

The Royal College of Physicians, which completed the invited review of the neurology service in February 2025, was due to publish the resulting report by the end of last year.

But it has now emerged that the review will not be published until February 2026, once an “action plan” in response to the review’s findings has been completed.

Following queries from Express, a spokesperson from the Health Department said: “An action plan in response to the review’s findings is now in the process of being drawn up.

“The review, along with the action plan, will be presented to the Health and Care Jersey Advisory Board in February.”

The review of Jersey’s neurology department was commissioned after a “serious incident, and was initially expected to be published by the end of 2024 amid “ongoing issues and concerns” within the service.

But, following delays from the external reviewers involved, the review was pushed back to 2025.

Reviewers conducted their investigations on 4 and 5 February 2025, and the Health Advisory Board said that initial feedback was “positive”.

The final terms of reference for the review were published in response to a request made under the Freedom of Information Law, which revealed that it will examine how the island’s neurology service meets modern standards.

A team of experts – including neurologists, specialist nurses, and a lay reviewer – were instructed to assess patient care, clinical governance, and future planning for neurological services.

The review was due to be carried out in two stages: first by studying clinical records of patients with epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis; and then by interviewing staff and reviewing policies.

The team was set to look at the quality of care, teamwork, communication with patients and families, and existing treatment pathways, and consider how services could be modernised and whether stronger links with external centres are needed.

A final report with recommendations is due to be issued to guide improvements.
