But the group isn’t the size it once was, and they’re now looking to build back up.

To boost numbers and interest in the game, they are looking for other local enthusiasts to join the club.

Express spoke with Scrabble club Chair Anne Pasturel about the group and the benefits of playing…

Tell me about the Jersey Scrabble club?

The Jersey Scrabble Club has been running for at least 50 years and I understand it was a well-supported vibrant club.

They had competitions against Guernsey, visiting each island, all before my time.

What does the club look like today?

How our club is today, a small friendly loyal group of very keen players. We run competitions throughout the year and have a prize giving just after our AGM.

We also have a monthly competition with a monetary prize for the best average score and a smaller prize for the most seven letter words.

Are there any benefits to playing scrabble?

Keeping the brain active is a plus, as is the fun and friendship we have with each other. None of us like to miss our Tuesday evening sessions.

Our oldest member is in her 90s and is sharp as a tack. We use a handicap system so that everyone has an opportunity to win a competition.

Do you run regular competitions?

We had our first tournament last year and while it was a success we could have done with a few more competitors.

Do you need to know how to play Scrabble to join?

It does help to be able to play. I have heard many people say ‘I love Scrabble’, but when invited to come along, there is always a reason they cannot.

Lots of people play online but there is no substitute for putting down an excellent word against a live opponent.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Just a little footnote, the late Simon Boas, was an excellent Scrabble player and was a member of our group for some years.
