Aviation enthusiasts are invited to the Jersey Aero Club’s open day this weekend where they will get a rare chance to see the Channel Islands Air Search’s rescue aircraft up close.
The open day will take place this Sunday 11 May from 10:00 to 16:00.
Channel Islands Air Search – a voluntary service providing a rapid response airborne search and rescue service in Channel Island waters – is hoping to display its rescue aircraft, the Lion’s Pride, at the event.
Peter Mourant from the Channel Islands Air Search explained that it takes around £300,000 a year to keep the service flying.
“We hope to be able to showcase our rescue aircraft the Lion’s Pride,” he added.
“We have our fingers crossed that the weather will be good on Sunday, and that the club gets a good turn-out.”
Meanwhile, the Jersey branch of the Royal Air Forces Association will also be at the event.
Branch Secretary David Nicholas explained that the charity’s centenary year aims include improving links with the wider aviation community and broadening its appeal to a younger demographic.
And local charity Helping Wings – which aims to share the excitement of flying in a light aircraft with islanders who would not otherwise not get the chance – will also be at the open day.
Eveline Hawkin from Helping Wings said: “We will be showing some videos of the people who have enjoyed flight experiences with us and we will be on hand to answer any questions the public have about the charity.”
Jersey Aero Club Executive Committee member Jasmine Clarke said the club is proud to work with local aviation charities.
“As a niche community, it is important that we support and encourage one another,” she explained.
“Each of the charities who will be participating in the club open day have a different area of focus, and this unique event enables us to bring all these organisations together.”
