A “much-loved” islander is to be remembered next month when runners and walkers take to Victoria Avenue dressed in yellow.

‘Run for Cass’ is set to return for a fifth year on 2 March 2025 to raise money and awareness for suicide prevention in memory of islander Cassie Porter.

The “outgoing” Year 1 teacher at Rouge Bouillon School passed away in 2020 following struggles with her mental health.

After her death, Cassie’s family set up a fundraiser that collected over four times its initial target.

Since then, her family and close friends have organised an annual race to celebrate Cassie’s life and raise more money for local charities.

Run for Cass will see participants walk or run from La Frégate to St Aubin and back on Sunday 2 March from 10:00.

This year’s race is being held on what would have been Cassie’s 34th birthday.

Organisers are encouraging everyone to wear yellow to raise awareness of suicide prevention.

Yellow was also Cassie’s favourite colour and the colour of her favourite flower: the sunflower.

Cassie’s family and friends described her as a “much-loved” school teacher who “touched the lives of so many”.

She also got involved with local charities such as Caring Cooks, which paid tribute to her as an “incredible teacher and a beautiful young lady”.

At Rouge Bouillon School, Cassie was the designated ‘eco’ teacher and was working on developing an outdoor area for pupils with a ‘friendship bench’ before her death.

Rouge Bouillon headteacher Russell Price described it as a place “where children can come in the playground if they want someone to play with”.

Previous funds raised from the Run for Cass event have gone towards making Cassie’s vision a reality with the installation of a new outdoor area at the school.

A charity is yet to be chosen for this year’s run, but a JustGiving page will be set up closer to the time once a charity has been nominated to benefit from this year’s fundraising efforts.
