Islanders planning on travelling to countries in the Schengen area will be subject to its new border system from the weekend.

British and Jersey passport holders will need to register their fingerprints and a photo at the border of all Schengen area countries as part of the new Entry/Exit System (EES), which will start from Sunday 12 October.

The Jersey Customs and Immigration Service explained that no prior action is required before travel and there is no cost for registration.

The 29 countries using the new EES system include popular destinations such as Italy, France, Spain and Germany.

The affected Schengen area also includes non-EU countries such as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. The Republic of Ireland and Cyprus are not affected by the changes.

EU nationals of those countries that participate in the new border system, as well as holders of residence cards, residence permits, or long-stay visas will not be affected.

More information on the new border system and the countries involved can be found online.
