From Sunday, Bailiwick residents planning on travelling to countries in the Schengen area will be subject to its new border system.

Guernsey passport holders will need to register their fingerprints and a photo at the border of all Schengen area countries as part of the new Entry/Exit System (EES), which will start from Sunday 12 October.

All British and non-EU passport holders travelling to Europe will be subject to the same changes.

A spokesperson for the States of Guernsey said it’s important to note that:

  • No action is needed before you travel.
  • There’s no cost for registration.
  • It also includes the following non-EU States: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein

The 29 countries using the new EES system include popular destinations such as Italy, France, Spain and Germany.

The affected Schengen area also includes non-EU countries such as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. The Republic of Ireland and Cyprus are not affected by the changes.

EU nationals of those countries that participate in the new border system, as well as holders of residence cards, residence permits, or long-stay visas will not be affected.
