Around 150 pupils from schools across Jersey will come together next week to share their views on the future of education on the Island.
The newly elected school council representatives will attend the School Council Network meeting on Tuesday 14 October, where they will discuss issues affecting young people and hear how their previous feedback has helped shape Jersey’s developing Education Vision.
The event will bring together pupils from primary and secondary schools, giving them the opportunity to share ideas and contribute to wider discussions about education.
They will also meet the four new Partnership Leads who will be working with schools across Jersey – John Baudains, Jo Terry-Marchant, Vicki Charlesworth and Jo Pearce.
Mr Baudains will provide an update on the Education Vision and explain how feedback from children and young people has influenced its development.
Meanwhile, Ms Charlesworth will present recent research into reading for pleasure in Jersey.
Pupils will be asked to consider the findings and discuss how reading could be encouraged and supported across the Island.
The meeting will also include a journalism workshop delivered by members of the JEP Junior editorial team.
Students will learn how to write a news story, discuss the issues that matter most to young people and find out how they can submit stories to JEP Junior.
Education Minister Catherine Curtis said: “I would like to congratulate all the students who have recently been elected to represent their schools on their school councils. Being chosen by your peers is a real achievement and reflects the confidence they have in your ability to speak up on behalf of others.
“School councils play a vital role in ensuring that children’s and young people’s voices are heard and taken into account. They help shape decisions within schools and contribute to wider discussions about education across Jersey.
“I wish all of our new school representatives every success in their roles and thank them for taking on this important responsibility. I am particularly pleased that they will have the opportunity to hear how their contributions have helped shape the Education Vision, meet our new Partnership Leads and share their views on issues that matter to them. Their voice is essential in helping us build the future of education in Jersey.”
