Co-op members will be asked whether they want their larger stores to open on a Sunday from June but the Society says it’ll be difficult to go back after the 18-month trial and will be the start of a permanent move to seven-day opening.

Chief Operating Officer Mark Cox said they want to get a view from their membership ahead of the trial scheme, which if approved by the States, will allow shops over 700 sq metres to apply for a Sunday trading permit.

But the Society says the competitive impact of other retailers opening seven days a week may force it to react and compete.

Mr Cox said: “I don’t think there would be much benefit in opening up the larger stores selling food as it won’t necessarily grow consumption but there could be in the non-food side of the business.  As retailers we have to look to compete against the internet.”
