Stats released by the States show that at the end of May there were 1,380 people out of work, with slightly more women than men registered with the Social Security department as “actively seeking work”.

The numbers are likely to take a turn for the worse in the next few months after last week’s news about the collapse of BHS, which is likely to affect around 60 staff.

The number of people who have been out of work or underemployed for more than a year also rose slightly over the last month to 250, but some of that is down to the way that the Social Security department calculates its figures.
