Three plays that have never been performed before like this will be under the spotlight at this month’s Plays Rough event at the Opera House Studio.

17 year-old Martha MacDonald is the youngest playwright involved in the event and is looking forward to getting cues from the audience on her latest work “We are the Young”.

She said: “Plays Rough is a great initiative for local writers because you have the opportunity to see how your work copes on stage. It may well be that you write something and in your head it works, but when it goes before an audience it falters, or a piece you’re not too keen on can flourish in this environment.

“I’m still learning a lot about the craft and what kind of writing I’m interested in so it’s wonderful to get feedback, and start thinking about how I want my work to look and sound in a space.”

The event will also be a chance for Plays Rough founder Leon Fleming to try out his new play Sid before it takes to the stage at the Camden Fringe Festival in London this summer.

Leon said: “Anyone in the audience really gets to be part of a work in progress which is going to be seen in the UK.”

Phil Regan is putting on his latest play “To drop dead in a Blackpool café” and there will be music from Justin Curran and poetry from Judy Mantle.

Plays Rough was started back in 2011 after encouragement from national theatre company Paines Plough who promote new writing all over the UK.

Tonight’s event costs £5 and kicks off at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased from the Jersey Opera House box office (01534 511115).
