Senior Meteorologist Paul Aked said last month was slightly cooler than normal at 13.4 degrees, just below the 13.5 degree average – and May was only the second in the last 18 months to have temperatures just below average.
February was the other month that was a bit chillier than normal – at 6.3 degrees, just below the 6.5 degree average.
But this year’s sunny spring doesn’t guarantee we’re in for a hotter summer too.
Mr Aked said: “There does not appear to be a clear, direct correlation between a warmer, drier and sunnier Spring being followed by a warmer, sunnier and drier Summer.
Looking at the records for temperature, a warmer than average spring is just as likely to be followed by a cooler than average summer as a warmer than average summer. Looking at the sunshine records we see similar results, a sunnier spring is just as likely to be followed by a sunnier than average summer as a duller than average summer.”
