Members of an organisation that supports retired volunteers from St John Ambulance travelled to London this month to take part in national events marking the group’s 25th anniversary – including carrying the official flag at a high-profile service at St Paul’s Cathedral.

The St John Fellowship in Jersey was set up in 2000 and now has around 90 members, making it the largest of more than 200 Fellowship groups across the UK.

Some of its members have been involved with St John Ambulance for as long as 70 years.

Nine members of the Jersey Fellowship travelled to London on Thursday 19 June.

After visiting local landmarks including the London Eye, the River Thames and Buckingham Palace, the group took part in a formal event at Mansion House, the residence of the Lord Mayor of London.

The event – known as the General Assembly – brought together hundreds of representatives from St John organisations across the British Isles and overseas.

Jersey was given a key role in the celebrations to mark its 25th anniversary.

At a service in St Paul’s Cathedral, islander Trevor Bayliss was chosen to carry the Fellowship’s flag – a ceremonial duty known as carrying the Standard – with Pearl Bayliss and Lady Isabella Harrison accompanying him.

John Brisset, a long-standing member of the group, carried the Jersey Commandery banner, representing the local branch.

Mr Brisset, who is also the Fellowship’s liaison officer, said Jersey had been “well represented and did the island proud” in front of around 2,000 attendees at the service.

The London trip is one of a number of events marking the Fellowship’s 25th anniversary.

Their next celebration will be held on Sunday 6 July in Howard Davis Park, where the Fellowship’s marching group will parade alongside the Band of the Island of Jersey.

The group’s president Carol Brisset will take the salute.
