Road closures have been put in place after a gas leak was discovered near St Saviour’s Hill.

Work is expected to take place overnight and into tomorrow morning.

The leak is at the junction of Deloraine Road and St Saviour’s Hill. St Saviour’s Hill from the junction with St Saviour’s Road when travelling uphill, St Saviour’s Hill from Five Oaks Roundabout, Langley Avenue / St Saviour’s Hill junction, Chasse Brunet, Sunshine Avenue and Deloraine Close have all been closed to traffic.

Island Energy confirmed this evening that investigation works were under way in the area, with traffic being redirected in both directions.

The company said: “We’re carrying out investigation works in the St Saviour’s Hill area, and traffic diversions are now in place.

“If you’re travelling through the area, please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey.”

Island Energy added that the works were expected to remain in place for around five days, although this could change as investigations progress.

In an update earlier this morning, the company said that work to repair the leak is expected to be completed tonight and, once tested and the road is refilled, St Saviour’s Hill is expected to open fully tomorrow.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Island Energy was alerted yesterday evening by a call to the 24-hour emergency line from a member of the public who smelt gas on St Saviour’s Hill.

“Our engineers identified a leak in the mains network near the junction of Deloraine Road and Chasse Brunet and have worked through the night to make it safe. That work will continue throughout today and this evening until the leak is repaired.

They added: “Island Energy is working with the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service and the States of Jersey Police and Honorary Police while the road remains closed. We would like to thank motorists, pedestrians and residents for their understanding. We would also like to take this opportunity to remind Islanders that if they smell gas or suspect a gas escape to call our 24-hour emergency line on 01534 755555.”

The disruption is also affecting public transport, with LibertyBus confirming that route 23 is being diverted via Wellington Hill in both directions.

The company added that diversion signs would be put in place and police would be assisting with traffic management.
