But rather than “sit around”, Kevin, who is no longer able to work, decided he would do something of real meaning for the local community.
Over the past few months, alongside Tamara, his wife of 31 years, he has been going round the island taking photos of sunrises and sunsets and collating them in a calendar with the intention of selling them to raise money for charity.
Word soon spread around the parish and with the support of his friends, Kevin’s calendars have found their way to all four corners of the world from New Zealand to America.
In the lead-up to Christmas, he gathered together the proceeds and used them to buy five bikes which he donated to Brightly, a local, independent charity that supports children and young people living in care.
Talking about the motivation behind his efforts, Kevin said: “[Christmas] is about children and we all remember our first bikes.”
He also emphasised the “unbelievably kind staff of foster care and social services” and, of course, the unwavering support of his loving wife, Tammy.
Brightly thanked Kevin and Shaun Crowther at Co–op bikes, who offered them a discount and provided free helmets for each child.
“We are so grateful to you both for helping us make Christmas a little more special for these children,” the charity said.
“There are going to be some very excited children on Christmas Day.”
