The driver of the car – a blue Audi Quattro – escaped uninjured after the collision, which sent debris raining down onto the street below.
The crash, which occurred around 08:00, left the roadside wall partly demolished, with large capping stones and other masonry scattered across Quai aux Marchands, near English Harbour and La Folie Inn.
“It was very lucky no-one was hurt,” said Duty Inspector Lynda McKenna. “If there’d been a car on the road below… well, it doesn’t bear thinking about. Fortunately, lots of people are off work, and there wasn’t much traffic at that time.”
Police officers quickly closed both Pier Road and Quai aux Marchands to allow for investigations, debris clearance, and safety checks on the damaged wall and a lamppost struck during the incident.
The Audi appeared to have collided with the wall in two places, leaving the vehicle severely damaged. However, officers confirmed that neither the driver nor anyone nearby was hurt.
By midday, work was still underway to make the area safe, with Jersey Electricity staff also inspecting the lamppost for potential damage. Islanders were urged to “avoid the area including Commercial Buildings and Mount Bingham”.
The road reopened shortly before 14:00.
