A supermarket worker accused of trying to kill his manager believed he was being watched by a secretive group – and needed to “send a message” to them, the Royal Court has heard.

Trevor Robert John Green (56), who is alleged to have stabbed the woman multiple times at Morrisons’ Castle Quay store on 18 November 2023, denies charges of attempted murder and grave and criminal assault.

A trial in the Royal Court before two Jurats, which is expected to last three days, opened yesterday morning.

The Royal Court heard that Mr Green suffers from a long-term, untreated paranoid psychotic illness, with two consultant forensic psychiatrists agreeing he experienced delusions.

Jurats were told he believed he was being persecuted by a group of elite gay men who had infiltrated his workplace.

Laying out the prosecution’s case before the court, Crown Advocate Luke Sette said Mr Green had claimed he had to “send a message” to those he believed had been pursuing and torturing him.

Advocate Sette explained that the incident followed an informal discussion between Mr Green, HR and the store manager after he allegedly failed to follow the shop’s price reduction policy.

According to the prosecution, he left the meeting, retrieved a silver kitchen knife from a storeroom, and launched a frenzied attack on the manager. The court heard that the weapon had a 20cm blade.

It is claimed that Mr Green stabbed his manager at least seven times, including in the neck, stomach and back. She later told colleagues, “I am going to die today,” while they tried to stem the bleeding from a neck wound using their hands and tissues.

The court heard that the woman suffered a severed artery and multiple deep wounds across her body, going into cardiac arrest twice. She spent 10 days in intensive care in Jersey before being transferred to Southampton, where she remained for nearly a month.

In a pre-recorded video interview played in court, the manager said she felt “like a piece of meat”. She now suffers lasting pain, limited mobility and flashbacks, the Royal Court heard.

CCTV footage showed Mr Green cleaning the knife, collecting his jacket, and calmly leaving the store.

He walked from La Frégate along the beach in the direction of St Aubin and was arrested later that day on Belcroute beach, reportedly compliant and quiet when officers arrived.

During police interview, he said: “I knew how to kill a person, and I did not want her to be dead” – but otherwise gave mostly ‘no comment’ responses.

The trial continues today.
