Young artists can compete for VIP access to next month’s air display by drawing their favourite aircraft from the show’s 70-year history.

The Jersey International Air Display has launched an art competition for children aged eight to 15 years old.

The winner in each age group will receive five VIP backstage passes to the static display, which includes a private tour, close access to aircraft, and the chance to ask questions of the crew.

The competition was devised by 18-year-old Annabel Harrop, who wanted to support an event that had been part of island life throughout her childhood.

Judging will be carried out by Annabel and former Chief Minister John Le Fondré, who chairs the Jersey International Air Display’s fundraising committee.

This year’s air display is due to take place on Thursday 11 September, with organisers aiming to deliver “one of the best” shows since before the pandemic. 

This year’s four-hour programme over St Aubin’s Bay includes the RAF Typhoon, Falcons Parachute Display Team, the Royal Navy’s Black Cats Helicopter Display Team, and historic aircraft such as the Catalina flying boat, Fairey Swordfish and Fokker D.XXI.

The RAF Red Arrows, who missed last year’s event due to a Canadian tour, will return as the headline act.

A static aircraft display will also return to Jersey Airport on Wednesday 10 September for the first time in five years, while the Lower Park on Victoria Avenue will host hospitality areas, food stalls, military vehicles and other activities.

Entries should be sent by email to sharonbetts@jerseyairdisplay.org.uk with the subject line “Jersey International Art Display” no later than Monday 1 September.

Only one submission per person is permitted, and entries can be created using any traditional or digital medium.

Each submission must include the entrant’s name, age and the name of the aircraft depicted.

The competition has two categories, for ages eight to 11, and 12 to 15.

Entries will be judged on creativity, quality and effort.

Winners will be notified by email on 4 September and must respond within 48 hours to claim their prize.
