Having told Express five things she would change about Jersey, Melissa now reflects on the island she’s spent a career photographing, and gives the top five things she treasures most about living on it…
1. Our ancient stones
Pictured: Jersey boasts dolmens older than Stonehenge.
We are so lucky to have such special sites of interest here in the Channel Islands.
Dolmens older than Stonehenge add such mystical energy to our landscape. I always love exploring these amazing constructions that were built by our ancestors.
2. The sea
Pictured: “I have been very fortunate to travel around the world, but Jersey’s beaches are still some of the best I’ve ever seen.”
We have a beautiful clean ocean surrounding us.
I have developed a love of swimming all year round and wouldn’t know what to do without the sea on my doorstep.
I have been very fortunate to travel around the world, but Jersey’s beaches are still some of the best I’ve ever seen.
3. Our folklore
Pictured: “We have so many interesting tales from this tiny little gem of an island; kelpies, witches, fairies and black dogs to name a few.”
Jersey’s historic story is fascinating.
We have so many interesting tales from this tiny little gem of an island; kelpies, witches, fairies and black dogs to name a few.
I love listening to all the different versions based on parishes or community groups. When we share these types of stories, people get a better understanding of their surroundings and feel more connected to places. I hope we never lose that!
4. Our community
Pictured: “I feel privileged that I have such a wonderful support network.”
I have always been drawn to smaller communities.
I love that all my family and closest friends are never too far away. It doesn’t take long to make plans and meet up with your nearest and dearest. I feel privileged that I have such a wonderful support network.
5. Our diversity
Pictured: “For an island so small we have such a wealth of culture.”
Our community is a melting pot of nationalities, religions and beliefs. For an island so small, we have such a wealth of culture. It enriches our network and is truly beautiful.
The diversity of our community offers our island a mix of skills, interests and talents.
We are very fortunate.
