A rugby player who started his career in Guernsey has just captained a side in South Africa’s highly competitive provincial leagues.
Daniel de Kock captained the Eastern Free State in his senior provincial debut against the Griffons Elande on Saturday.
He moved with his family to Guernsey from South Africa in 2004, where he started playing for St Jacques Vikings – the second team of Guernsey Raiders.
Having already played for Western Province U19 and Maties at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, and Leicester Under-20s, Mr de Kock is no stranger to ultra-competitive environments.
However, when Daniel returned to South Africa in 2024, he nearly walked away from the sport altogether.
This changed when he was called up to represent Frankfort Rugby Club in the Free State Premier League.
His performances there earned him an invitation to the Eastern Free State provincial trials, which paved the way to senior provincial rugby.
