She sailed over 1.56m to win the high jump competition, an 11cm improvement on her previous best just over a week earlier in Hampshire, and recording at top Island Games qualifying standard to boot.

In the 800m, Darcey Hodsgon lowered her season’s best to 2:13.74, another performance well inside the qualifying criteria for Orkney 2025.

The event also featured a 2000m steeplechase in which Jack Rees ran 6:28.52, just outside the English schools national standard.

A development 1500m steeplechase was comfortably won by James Stafford-Bell in 5:12.42 with a big battle between Grace King (5:44.29) and Orla Montgomery (5:44.75) to the leading girl.

Abi Galpin made her first 200m outdoor outing this season and clocked 23.95s, beating her times from an injury disrupted 2023 and comfortably inside the Games’ A-Standard.

That race was won by U15 Emil Freidrich in 23.63s, a substantial PB on a day in which he also jumped 1.55m in the high jump and threw the 1.5k discus 31.55m.

Tom Brierley launched the heavier senior discus to 32.47m.

A race aimed at some of the more experienced athletes was the Masters’ Metric Mile, more commonly the 1500m.

It was won by Chris Gilman (V40) in 4:28.02 from Matt Jamieson (V45) with a new PB of 4:32.02.

At the other end of the age range, an impressive number of U13 athletes tasted competitive action over 800m, high jump, 75m, discus and the 150m all looking to beat their previous best to clock up points.
