Liberation Pétanque Club’s annual Handicap Cup once again provided plenty of excitement, as newer players received a head start on points against more experienced opponents in a competitive and entertaining tournament.
Standout results
Among the standout group stage results of the competition held recently at the Club’s home terrains at the Weighbridge, Jean Stewart recorded a convincing 13-3 win over Tony Morton, while Colin Floyd just got the edge over Katrina Holden, winning 13-11.
Defending champion Neil Selby survived a scare against Colin, winning 13-12, but was later beaten by Jim Waddell in the final round of group matches.
New member Phillip Clatworthy claimed his first tournament victory by defeating fellow newcomer Paul Hymas, while Jean narrowly missed out on qualification on points difference to Colin.
In the quarterfinals, Andrew Bellamy Burt, Callum Stewart and Keith White all progressed, but the biggest surprise came as Graeme Toudic eliminated defending champion Neil Selby 13-9.
The performance of the tournament
The semi-finals saw Callum Stewart produce the performance of the tournament with a stunning 13-0 victory over Keith White, while Bellamy defeated Toudic 13-7 to reach the final.
Stewart made a strong start in the final and never looked back, defeating Bellamy 13-8 to lift the Handicap Cup title.
White secured third place.
