The Channel Islands Over-50s returned to action on Wednesday afternoon, but were comfortably beaten by a strong Hampshire side at Grainville.
The National Cricket Centre hosted the 40-over fixture, with the visitors producing a dominant all-round display to secure victory inside 19 overs.
Fresh from overseas trips to the Isle of Wight and Somerset last month, the Channel Islands welcomed back several familiar faces, including experienced left-arm seamer Mark Reynolds.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, the hosts struggled to gain momentum against a disciplined Hampshire attack.
Openers GH Smit and Phil Ramage faced the new ball, but wickets fell regularly throughout the innings. Only two batters reached double figures as the Channel Islands were dismissed off the final ball of their allocation for 111.
Mark Clapham was the standout performer with a patient 49 from 81 deliveries, anchoring the innings while wickets tumbled around him. Ramage’s 12 was the next highest contribution.
Captain Meeku Patidar offered resistance during a 38-ball stay at the crease, but Hampshire’s bowlers maintained control throughout.
Their dominance was reflected in the numbers, with 206 dot balls delivered from the 240 legal deliveries bowled.
Andy Pearce led the attack with outstanding figures of 4-12 from six overs. Gary Clapham (2-16) and Asad Abbas (2-20) also claimed two wickets apiece, while skipper Stu Shapland conceded just 13 runs from his eight overs.
Facing a challenging target to defend, the Channel Islands made the perfect start with the ball.
Reynolds struck with the very first delivery of the innings, trapping Paul Burrows lbw, before removing Jim Edwards soon after to leave Hampshire wobbling at 5-2.
When fellow opener Clapham departed for 12 with the score on 24-3, caught by Smit, the hosts sensed an opportunity.
However, Hampshire captain Shapland and Pearce quickly extinguished those hopes.
Pearce followed up his four-wicket haul with a brisk 35 from 33 balls, while Shapland produced a match-winning unbeaten 50 from just 44 deliveries, striking 10 boundaries.
The visitors reached their target in the 19th over to complete a convincing victory, although the Channel Islands will take encouragement from Reynolds’ impressive return and another valuable outing against quality opposition.
