JERSEY FA Walking Football Teams Shine in Saintes, France.

Jersey FA’s Over-50s and Over-60s Walking Football teams showcased their prowess at the Nations Trophy in Saintes, France, setting the stage for the upcoming World Nations Cup in October.

The Over-60s squad, featuring several players experiencing international competition for the first time, faced a challenging start with a narrow 1-0 loss to Wales.

However, they bounced back impressively, securing victories against France and a draw with England on the first day. On Sunday, they clinched wins over Basque Country and Ireland, finishing second in their group.

Co-manager Jon Welsh reflected on the team’s performance: “What a great experience for the guys. We started nervously but came back with determination, playing excellent walking football. This tournament has filled us with confidence for the World Nations Cup.”

The Over-50s team remained unbeaten in their first five matches, drawing against hosts France and a formidable Ireland side. A standout moment came when they led eventual champions Italy 2-1 into injury time before conceding an equaliser.

They also achieved a remarkable 2-1 victory over the current World Champions, England, after trailing 1-0 at half-time.

Bob Richardson and Ricky Weir travelled with the squad and contributed their officiating expertise.

Joint manager Steve Martin said: “While we drew three games, we demonstrated that Jersey is a growing force in world walking football.
“Our performance against England was particularly significant, showcasing our resilience and tactical acumen.”

Jersey referees Bob Richardson and Ricky Weir contributed their expertise, officiating matches and ensuring the tournament ran smoothly.

The teams were largely self-funded, with additional support from Jersey Sport’s Travel Grant funding. Both squads are now focused on their preparations for the World Nations Cup, scheduled for October 2025 in Alicante, Spain.

The tournament is expected to feature over 60 nations across various age categories.
