GSPCA warns animal owners ahead of first firework displays

The GSPCA is urging animal owners to prepare for fireworks, warning that loud noises and flashes can frighten pets and livestock. One of the first fireworks displays of the season is due to take place at 19:00 on Tuesday night at Maison Daval Farm, GY6 8LB. GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne said fireworks could cause animals distress, lead pets to escape and leave livestock alarmed. Dog owners are advised to walk their pets before displays begin, keep them indoors and provide a safe hiding place. Cat owners should bring their pets inside before dark, while small animals should be given extra bedding and sheltered from noise. Horse and livestock owners are urged to check fencing and gates, provide secure shelter and avoid moving animals during displays where possible. The GSPCA is also encouraging islanders to complete its fireworks survey and report incidents involving animals through its online reporting form. Advice on protecting animals during fireworks is available from the GSPCA and the States of Guernsey
