Pet owners are being urged to take extra care this New Year’s Eve, as several firework displays are planned across Guernsey and concerns grow about the impact on animals.

The GSPCA said it was aware of at least three organised firework events taking place on Wednesday 31 December, and warned that the noise can be “extremely distressing” for many animals.

“New Year Fireworks may be a celebration for some, but for many animals they are a source of fear and confusion,” manager Steve Byrne said.

“We are aware of three events… and urge islanders to take precautions for their pets. We want everyone to be safe as we move from 2025 into 2026.”

What firework displays are happening tonight?

According to the GSPCA, known firework events are scheduled for:

  • 6pm in Les Eturs, Castel,
  • 7pm in the GY4 6UN area,
  • 11.55pm at The Manor, Rue Des Croisse in the Forest.

What can pet owners do to calm their animals?

The GSPCA has also issued practical advice for pet owners, including:

  • keeping animals indoors during displays,
  • creating a safe and familiar space,
  • using calming aids if needed,
  • avoiding leaving pets alone, and
  • ensuring microchip details are up to date in case they flee in fear.

How can I share my views on fireworks?

The charity is continuing to work with local authorities to promote responsible firework use and raise awareness of its impact on animals.

The charity is encouraging islanders to report any firework-related incidents or animal upsets through its Firework Incident or Upset Survey, and to share wider views via its Firework Survey 2025.

Mr Byrne said the data helps the charity understand the scale of the issue and advocate for change.

“Last year nearly 3% of our entire population completed our firework survey – just short of 2,300 people,” he said. “The more we understand, the better we can advocate for change and support those affected.”

What if I am planning on putting on a firework display?

Information about firework rules and guidance is available via the States of Guernsey website, while anyone planning a display within three nautical miles of the airport should register their event with Guernsey Ports for aviation safety reasons.
