The annual Guernsey Business Trends Survey carried out by Island Analysis on behalf of YBG is now complete. The survey aims to establish the opinion of local businesses on the current economic situation both within the sector in which they operate and in the island in general.

Respondents represent a wide spectrum of sectors that make up Guernsey’s business community including hospitality and tourism, construction, retail, professional services and finance.

Around 50% of businesses reported both their turnover and profitability in 2013 to be either substantially or slightly up on 2012. Over 50% of respondents equally predict both turnover and profitability to be up this year.

When questioned on the levels of confidence in the island’s economy over the next 12 months, 15% reported feeling more confident than this time last year and 28% feeling less confident. Results indicated that the three issues that the business sector sees as the highest priorities for the island to tackle are: adopting an effective economic diversification strategy; addressing the level of skills in the Island particularly amongst younger members of the community; ensuring there is a sustainable population strategy in place including managing an aging population.

Full results of the survey will be presented by BWCI’s Matt Stanbury at a seminar being held on 3 June at Les Cotils when attendees will also have to opportunity to question a panel of senior business professionals on the implications of the survey results and how the island might address the key issues its business sector is facing. The panelists are:

Richard Tee - CEO Heritage Group
Clive Fenner - MD Norman Piette
Paul Luxon - Minister PSD
