WATCH: Jersey... though the eyes of a 'Channel Exile'

Friday 19 April 2024

When Netherlands-based artist Casper Strietman came to Jersey for the first time, he didn't know what he would find.

The artist – whose varied works range from oil paintings to ink drawings, with a focus on capturing live action at music festivals – recently took up residency at ArtHouse Jersey's Grève de Lecq Barracks.

During his weeks on the island, Casper said the "foundations" of Jersey started to reveal themselves to him.

What emerged, he says, was a "mini metropolis" somewhere between reality and a "dreamworld", "secluded in a landscape of beauty".

This resulted in a series of oil colour paintings of various areas of Jersey, ranging from the Central Market to the Lido and States Assembly building, which are now on display in a free exhibition entitled 'The Channel Exile' at Jersey Heritage's Link Gallery, next to the Museum.

Following the completion of his work, Casper took some time to answer questions on his inspirations and personal style from Raissa Reis Anolasco, who was on work experience with Express. Here's what he had to say...

What inspired you to become an artist?

A sense and urge to address and react to everything around me. Art's aspect of functionality is to inform.

You have previously specialised in live action drawings of music performances – what inspired you to do these?

My live action drawings don't relate too much to the works made in Jersey. However, they are, without any doubt, one of the most exciting things I've done. It consists of making, or rather performing live action drawings, portraits of DJs, live on stage on music festivals.

The energy and the heat of the moment, it's definitely an addictive unreal feeling. If you would ask how it relates, I guess you could call Jersey an intriguing festival in its own right.

What do you like the most about being an artist?

The consciousness about everything, however unimportant things may seem at first glance.

What did you like the most about Jersey?

What I like the most is when you approach the island from a distance, on a boat, it takes away all of the content.

The closer you get, the more it starts showing itself. Having spent every summer of my life in Carteret, Normandy I'm very much raised with the Jersey silhouette on the horizon.

When you have a creativity block, what do you do?

I envision a creativity block as a creative period.

Creativity is the coming together of practice – action and reaction. What it comes down to, in simple words, is looking and interpreting what you see into your own image.
