Islanders could be eligible to vote in next month's UK General Election

Monday 22 May 2017

Tens of thousands of Channel Islanders could be eligible to vote without even realising it.

Anyone from Jersey who has lived in and registered to vote in the UK over the past 15 years can register as an overseas voter, while Jersey-born students currently attending university in the UK is also able to cast their ballot in what is one of the most contentious General Elections in decades.

But time is running out for those islanders wishing to have a say in the future of Britain, with the deadline looming tonight at 23:59.

Local Deputy Sam Mézec is now urging Jersey people to make the most of their democratic right, arguing that Channel Islanders enjoy and depend on many of the UK’s services:

“Jersey people often depend on the services provided in the UK, like the NHS and their universities, so it is really important that those who can vote try to have at least a small influence in picking a government which will be best for Jersey.

“With Brexit on the horizon, it is particularly important that we get a government which won't sell us or the other overseas territories down the river if the EU presents an unfavourable deal.”

Those wishing to register can do so online in under five minutes by clicking here.

Postal voters have until 17:00 tomorrow to apply, while proxy voters (those using someone else to vote on their behalf) must apply by Wednesday 31 May.

The snap General Election will take place on Thursday 8 June.
