One in six Gov employees still waiting on pay deal

Approximately one in six government employees have yet to reach a pay agreement for 2023.

Answering questions in the States Assembly, Vice-Chair of the States Employment Board Constable Andy Jehan said that negotiations with nursing and teaching unions, representing around 1,500 staff, were continuing.

Mr Jehan said that all other pay groups covering a total of 9,000 public sector employees had accepted the SEB's 7.9% offer.

Deputy Montfort Tadier noted government comments that there was no further money available and asked what the SEB was negotiating with.

Mr Jehan said it was hoped that some savings would be realised, and pointed out that negotiations regarding teachers' terms and conditions were ongoing.

Fresh talks with nursing unions were scheduled at the end of this week, he said, whereas teaching unions had declined the employer's offer of arbitration.

Earlier this month members of the NEU staged a one-day strike, while two other teaching unions are currently engaged in 'work to rule' action.
