Guernsey this week set a new record for the most expensive home ever sold in the island… but does it beat Jersey's in terms of luxury? And which would you prefer to live in? Let the battle commence...

Find out more about each home, then have your say in our poll below...

Guernsey

The property: St George, Castel

Price tag: £25,000,000

Spec: Set in 35 acres of "meticulously maintained grounds comprising ornamental and parkland gardens", St George is a property with significant history.

According to estate agents Saville, "it was for many years the country seat of the Guille family which could trace their roots back to William the Conqueror and, at one time, it was notably the home of Captain John Guille who went on to be appointed the Bailiff of Royal Court in 1842".

"With parts of the property dating as far back as the 16th Century, the main house was substantially rebuilt in the Palladian style as a gentleman's residence in the 1800s to make it one of the island's best landed homes. In more recent years, the current owner has undertaken a complete programme of works on the estate, its various ancilliary dwellings, outbuildings and grounds utilising the professional services of renowned architects, interior designers and landscape gardeners," the online ad continued.

In terms of perks, the new owner will be able to benefit from three family and guest cottages, an indoor pool and "health suite" and two additional properties to house their staff.

Property agent Nick Paunch went so far as to say it is "one of the best houses I have evert seen anywhere".

Jersey

The property: Eden House, St Brelade

The price tag: £31,000,000

The spec: The record for the most expensive home ever sold in Jersey, meanwhile, is held by Eden House, which sold in 2021 for £31m.

Marketed by estate agents Wilsons Knight Frank, the property originally had a price tag of £25m – but it was so highly sought-after that a bidding war between two wealthy individuals saw it shoot up by another £6m.

The 16,000sq-ft ten-bedroom property included garage parking for six cars and a separate guest cottage, as well as an outdoor infinity pool and an indoor spa complex.

The luxury home also featured direct access to the dune land and beach and was described at the time as having an "unrivalled" west-facing location, boasting "panoramic sea views" from most rooms.

…still on the market

The property: Maison de la Valette, Trinity

The price tag: £32,000,000

The spec: But there is a nine-bedroom Trinity property on the market which could snatch the title of Jersey’s most expensive home to be sold.

Maison de la Valette sold for roughly £25 million in 2016 but returned to the market in September 2021. At the time, it was on offer for £39.9m – but £8m was knocked off in 2023 after around 18 months on the market.

Described by estate agents being set in “one of the most important private estates in Jersey that carries international recognition”, the property sits in the centre of grounds covering 18 acres.

It features two small lakes, and is approached by a long, tree-lined driveway. The principal property is 21,000sq-ft and includes nine bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, and 12 reception rooms. The property also features a wine store, cinema room, gym, swimming pool, a large games room, an office suite and an orangery.

Staff also have their own quarters, and there is a 4,000sq-ft stables, paddocks, ponds and private woodland.
