The Guernsey International Business Association has launched a new careers initiative to remind people that the finance sector is about ‘More Than Just Numbers.

The idea is to highlight the wide range of roles and opportunities available across Guernsey’s finance sector.

The launch coincided with the 2025 Careers and Skills Show earlier this month to encourage islanders to explore the diversity of the industry and the many pathways it offers.

The initiative focuses on the view that finance is not just about working with numbers, but about people, ideas, and innovation. It brings together information about the variety of roles available in areas such as marketing and communications, legal, human resources, data and technology, and operations, alongside accountancy and administration.

Jo Peacegood, Chair of GIBA, said: “There can be a view that working in finance means you’re only working with numbers all day and that you need maths qualifications to get started – but we want to dispel that myth. The breadth of opportunities the sector offers in Guernsey is fantastic; and it really can be a people orientated career.

“Through ‘More Than Just Numbers’, we’re also highlighting how important soft skills are, things like teamwork, communication and a willingness to learn. There are so many routes into the industry for school leavers, graduates, and those looking for a career change or a new challenge.”

Sarah Stonebridge from Careers Guernsey said: “Guernsey’s finance sector continues to offer a wide range of exciting opportunities for school leavers and graduates, with roles such as trainee accountants, trust administrators, and insurance associates among the many career paths available locally we saw young people pursue in 2024. With so many opportunities available, it can get confusing so this guide will provide helpful information about the different roles and professional training pathways within finance locally, so that career decisions are well-informed.”

The More Than Just Numbers initiative provides a comprehensive look at the many professional qualifications supported by employers on island, from accountancy and compliance to leadership, marketing and law. It highlights how career development, training, and international experience are available within Guernsey’s globally connected financial services sector.

Ms Peacegood continued: “Guernsey has all the ingredients to attract and retain talented people. Our finance industry is broad, inclusive and forward-looking, and we hope More Than Just Numbers helps people see just how many ways there are to build a fulfilling career here.”
