A new year long course is being rolled out in Guernsey to keep anyone over the age of 65 more active to give them more independence.
The Health Improvement Commission has committed to bring ‘REACT’, a programme developed by leading UK universities and community groups, to the island with funding provided by the Guernsey Community Foundation.
It is designed for people already facing mobility issues in their older age by offering weekly sessions designed to improve strength and balance in a friendly group environment.
The evidence-based and free to access REACT programme has been recorded as preventing mobility issues and improving physical function in a cost-effective way.
“We know that physical activity is one of the most powerful tools we have to support healthy ageing,” said Sam Green, Adult Physical Activity Officer at the Health Improvement Commission. “REACT is a fantastic opportunity for older adults in Guernsey to improve their mobility, stay independent, and connect with others in a supportive environment.”
Afroditi Stathi, Professor of Physical Activity and Community Health at the University of Birmingham, and REACT Chief Investigator, said she was delighted to see the island sign up to the programme.
“This milestone means more older adults can access a proven, life-changing programme that helps them stay mobile, independent, and connected – strengthening community ties across the island,” she added.
There will be twice weekly sessions for the first three months before switching to once weekly, and sessions include social time to discuss healthy ageing and inspire confidence to keep active.
Applications are now open for the inaugural edition of REACT, which starts in February 2026.
