A consultant praised by patients for guiding them through some of their most difficult moments was among those honoured at the Medical Specialist Group’s annual Celebrating Excellence Awards.

This year’s awards were the first to feature a ‘Patients’ Choice’ category, which was presented alongside five other awards.

Dr Yaroslav Stefak, a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Pain Management, received the award in the coveted new category.

The MSG said Dr Stefak was nominated by patients and their families for his supportive nature during difficult periods and his thoroughness in explaining medical options.

Dr Stefak said he was “totally humbled by winning this wonderful award, particularly knowing there are so many people across the MSG who deserve this recognition.”.

“Patient care should always be at the heart of everything we do,” he added.

Reflecting on the awards, MSG Deputy Chair and Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Michelle Le Cheminant said it was “a privilege to read through the 50 nominations submitted by our patients and family members”.

“They were genuine, heartfelt reflections written by people whose lives we as a team have helped to improve,” she continued.

“Patients wrote about kindness, compassion and humility, about going above and beyond, and about expertise and professionalism.”

The remaining five categories were decided by internal nominations from MSG colleagues.

The Patient First award went to Rebecca Finch, a Surgical PA Associate, with the MSG stating she was nominated for her efforts in streamlining patient journeys and exceeding standard expectations.

The Clinical Excellence award was given to Mr Andrew Pelser, an ENT Consultant.

He was recognised by the organisation for maintaining care standards, and providing patient time even during high-capacity clinics.

The One Team award was won by the MSG Nursing Team at Alexandra and Mill House.

A spokesperson for the MSG described this 28-person team as “efficient” and “focused on patient safety”.

The Going the Extra Mile award was presented to IT Manager Marc Le Page. He was awarded for working outside of standard hours and contributing to projects beyond his primary remit.

Finally the Unsung Hero award was given to Governance Manager Vicky Tucker. The MSG say they recognised her for her work in quality improvement and managing the behind-the-scenes systems that support service safety.
