Nine Early Years Additional Learning Needs Coordinators in Guernsey have successfully completed the internationally recognised CACHE Level 3 Award for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinators.
The training, fully funded by the States Early Years Team, aims to equip participants with in-depth knowledge of statutory requirements, local and national SEND guidance, and the Graduated Approach for early identification. It also looked to develop their practical skills in leading teams, and collaborating with health and social care professionals, all in line with the 2024 Additional Learning Needs Code of Practice.
Tia Hughes, Sarah Ellis, Kate Taylor, Karyn Merrien, Elaine Allen, Megan Wheating, Rebecca Gallie, Alice Ogier, and Louise Garnham all qualified whilst representing various local nurseries and preschools.
Feedback highlights increased confidence in supporting children with ALN, improved team collaboration, and practical changes to policies and parent engagement.
Anne-Marie Grinsell, Early Years Inclusion Officer and course tutor, expressed pride in the educators’ commitment.
“I am so proud of these Early Years Educators, who have committed to this professional development whilst continuing to work. They have worked hard, and you can see how much they have grown in confidence in their roles.”
Ruth Sharp, Head of Early Years, praised their achievement and the fostered sense of community among the group.
“They should be quite rightly very proud of themselves for this fantastic achievement. I have noticed how supportive they are of one another and how much this course has fostered a sense of togetherness, sharing and supporting one another in their roles.
“Their teams and the children they work with are well supported. And so were they – it was a pleasure to have their families, friends and colleagues attend the celebration too and get to thank them for all their support and encouragement.”
Guernsey’s Director of Education, Nick Hynes commended the educators.
“What a great achievement by these dedicated Early Years Educators – they are a credit to themselves and their settings. I am also pleased to see all Anne-Marie’s work come to fruition; she has worked hard not only to complete her training but has skilfully passed on her knowledge to all the professionals involved.
“Making this award available to our valued partners demonstrates our ongoing commitment to ensuring that the youngest children in our community have access to the best and most qualified staff available.”
