A longstanding Crown Advocate has moved into private practice following a “key acquisition” by a law firm seeking to bolster its team with his “extensive” courtroom experience.

Advocate Matthew Maletroit has been appointed as a partner at Baker & Partners, marking a new chapter in a career that includes nearly two decades of public service.

He was sworn-in as an Advocate of the Royal Court in 2013 and as a Crown Advocate around two years later.

Advocate Maletroit has served as Jersey’s Acting Attorney General on numerous occasions.

He said: “Moving into private practice after 17 years in public service is not a decision made lightly.

“However, I have always been impressed by Baker & Partner’s reputation for delivering the very highest standards of work, and the firm’s success in complex cases.”

He added: “I am delighted to have joined Jersey’s strongest set of litigators, and I look
forward to furthering the success and reputation of the firm.”

Baker & Partners is a specialist offshore litigation firm with offices in Jersey, BVI,
Cayman Islands and London.

The firm’s global managing partner, Stephen Baker, said that “Matthew’s extensive courtroom experience makes him a key acquisition to our team”.

“He has repeatedly been entrusted with matters which come with great responsibility. In undertaking that work he has shown the ability to deal with the most stressful situations calmly and has always pursued his cases fairly but tenaciously,” he continued.

“His collaborative and friendly approach to clients and colleagues make him an
excellent fit for Baker & Partners during this period of growth.

“We warmly welcome Matthew to the team.”
