A local cheerleading club is hoping to attract more boys to the sport as it looks to expand its teams and challenge misconceptions about cheerleading.
Ace Elite said it wants to show that cheerleading is “for everyone” and not just girls, after being inspired by the number of male athletes competing at a major event in Birmingham in June.
Club representatives said they were impressed by the talent on display at the competition, particularly the strong presence of male athletes on UK teams.
However, they said recruiting new members can be difficult because of the outdated perception that cheerleading is simply about “pom-poms”.
In reality, the sport combines strength, athleticism and teamwork, with athletes learning skills including stunts, jumps, tumbling and dance routines.
Ace Elite said cheerleading helps participants build confidence, learn new skills and form lasting friendships, and is encouraging more boys and young men to give the sport a try.
