Are you interested in making a meaningful impact in our community by ensuring the highest standards of care within our prison system?

The Independent Monitoring Panel (IMP) is looking for dedicated individuals to join its team.

The IMP plays a crucial role in overseeing the standards of care and detention at the Guernsey Prison, ensuring that detainees are treated with dignity and respect.

The IMP is an independent body, made up of volunteers who undertake regular visits to the prison, and talk with staff and prisoners about their experiences and any concerns they may have. Members are responsible for:

• Conducting monthly unannounced visits to the prison;

• Engaging with detainees to understand their experiences and concerns;

• Observing the conditions of detention and treatment of prisoners;

• Reporting on its findings and making recommendations to improve prison standards.

As a volunteer for the IMP, you maintain oversight of a system most members of the public do not get to see. Through this role, your unique insight into this closed environment ensures transparency, impartiality and accountability in our prison.

The Panel is looking for individuals who can work collaboratively as a team, and who possess good observational and communication skills. Members will handle sensitive information and must do so with discretion.

Training is provided, and no prior experience of prison monitoring is required. Anyone over the age of 18 can apply. Diversity is valued and applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The role – which is subject to relevant disclosure and vetting checks – is voluntary, although expenses incurred may be reimbursed where appropriate.

Interested individuals are invited to visit the IMP webpage on gov.gg for more information and to read the IMP’s Annual Reports – Independent Prison Monitoring Panel – States of Guernsey and to contact the IMP by emailing HomeAffairs@gov.gg to receive an application form.
