Jersey Coastguard has recently launched its annual summer Safety @ Sea campaign aimed at local primary school children.
For the first time in almost three years, officers from Jersey Coastguard are once again able to attend schools in person to give their safety presentation to pupils, and over the course of the next 6-weeks are hoping to engage with up to 4,500 youngsters. Due to the pandemic, the campaigns have been presented online for the past two years.
Chris Robinson, from Jersey Coastguard, who, together with colleagues, is responsible for the Safety @ Sea Campaign initiative, explains, “Despite Covid restrictions coming into place, we were determined that this wouldn’t impact our annual campaign, so we posted our videos and presentations online instead and the response continued to be very positive. However, it’s great to be able to go back into the schools and engage with the pupils and teachers face to face as it really helps us to get these important sea safety messages across. And of course, by meeting them in person we can also answer any questions they have, however random they might be!”
This year’s topics focuses on sea and coastal safety, search and rescue partners, beach lifeguards and the beach flag system, as well as rip tides. Alongside a general overview, Jersey Coastguard is also compiling a new comic strip video and story line to accompany the presentations.
