The Channel Islands Co-operative Society has completed a £3m investment in its Grand Marché store in St Peter.
The redevelopment, which brings together all of the Society’s brands under one roof for the first time, and has created six new jobs, significantly reduces its environmental footprint and offers greater convenience to customers in the west of the Island.
The store now offers a Co-operative Travelmaker and over 400 new products are available in the store, including a new range of home ware and electrical items. Following a revamped layout, fresh products now have an increased space at the entrance of the store. Parents can also take advantage of children’s play facilities whilst they shop through the new Tot Stop, an interactive learning play area which is supervised by qualified staff.
As part of the refurbishment, which started in January 2015, the Pharmacy Locale has been improved and increased in size and patients of Co-operative Medical Care now have easier access to the surgery through the installation of a new lift.
The investment will bring major environmental benefits including a 40% reduction in the cost of running the store. This has been achieved through the installation of LED lighting and a new air conditioning and heating system, alongside new refrigeration units with doors.
The Channel Islands Co-operative Society’s Chief Operating Officer, Mark Cox, said: "The major refurbishment of Grand Marché in St Peter offers much greater convenience for islanders living in the west, who now have access to all of the Society’s brands under one roof. To complement the range of services now on offer, I am delighted that we have been able to recruit six new employees who will work exclusively in the St Peter store.
"Reducing our environmental impact has been a key consideration for us during this refurbishment and we are proud that the store is now significantly more energy efficient. As a community owned company, we are committed to investing in our stores so that they offer customers easy access to the products and services that they need, but with minimum impact on our environment."
