Construction company becomes Jersey's first 'carbon literate' business

Tuesday 05 December 2023

A local construction company has become the first business in the Channel Islands to be accredited by an international climate change education project for its efforts to reduce emissions.

Ashbe Construction Limited has been recognised as a Bronze Level Carbon Literate Organisation by the Carbon Literacy Project.

This certification reflects the company’s efforts to develop an environmentally sustainable business, including adjusting its working practices, maintaining a low-carbon culture, and training its management workforce on the impact of climate change.

The Carbon Literacy Project is an international climate change education programme that raises awareness about climate change, carbon footprints, reducing emissions, and how this relates to individuals and businesses.

Ashbe’s entire management team received carbon literacy training from sustainability consultancy firm Acacia Limited last month.

Louise Eden of Acacia Limited said: “The business has shown real dedication to adapting their working practices and making a positive contribution to reducing emissions and supporting the island’s Carbon Neutral Strategy.

"The built environment accounts for approximately 40% of worldwide global emissions, so the sector offers one of the biggest opportunities to make real reductions.”

Managing Director of Ashbe Construction Limited, Ben Cairney added: “We know our industry is a huge contributor to global emissions, and this is the first step towards our goal of being the Environmental Contractor of Choice in Jersey.”
