Atlantic celebrates eco recognition

Friday 09 February 2024

Jersey’s Atlantic Hotel and Ocean Restaurant has achieved a Silver Certification from the world's leading advisory group for businesses when it comes to sustainability.

It comes after it the team had already achieved the bronze certificate with EarthCheck.

The hotel is now continuing its journey towards a gold, and then, hopefully, platinum certification.

Gaining the latter means becoming an EarthCheck master. Currently, The Atlantic is the only hotel in the Channel Islands and one of the first 10 hotels in the British Isles to achieve silver status with EarthCheck.

"Although in many ways we are still just starting out on our journey towards becoming a more sustainable business, attaining Silver Status is a huge achievement for our team," said Patrick Burke, Owner and Managing Director.

"It has taken us the best part of two years, working with local sustainability expert, Sheena Brockie, to examine, record and report on just about every process that takes place in the hotel which is not a simple task. This culminated in a inspection by an EarthCheck auditor prior to the award being given."

He continued: “We are very aware that it is Jersey’s environmental and cultural assets that attract visitors to the island and that these need to be protected and responsibly managed.

"Jersey’s visitor economy and its operators are going to be key to driving change and we’re committed to playing our part.”

As well as working through the EarthCheck programme, The Atlantic Hotel has implemented several sustainable practices.

This has included prioritising local suppliers and producers wherever possible, introducing processes for sorting and recycling waste and reducing the amount of printed material, such as newspapers, in favour of digital resources.

The hotel is also working to transition towards cleaner energy by reducing gas consumption, and has championed environmental causes and raised £45,000 to date.
