Barclays Duck to have rainbow design in 2016

Wednesday 17 June 2015

The Barclays Duck will have a rainbow design for the 2016 Barclays Jersey Boat Show, courtesy of nine-year-old Holly Freitas who won a public vote on the Barclays’ Facebook Page.

Miss Freitas completed her design with her Brownie group. The group completed their competition designs at a special session and also used the Hook a Duck game at the Brownie Fete, raising £75 for the Red Cross.

A panel of judges picked their three favourite designs from the entries and posted them on Barclays’ Facebook page to allow the public to ‘like’ their preferred design.

The 2016 ducks will be created using the rainbow design and Miss Freitas will have the exclusive chance to see the duck before the show.

The competition was open to all primary school students. Entrants were allowed to use any materials they liked to create their design, including crayons, paint and pencils. Contestants had the option to submit their entries in the Barclays branch or on social media.

The duck itself has become an icon of the Barclays Jersey Boat Show since its first appearance in 2010. It is a firm favourite with children and adults alike playing the ‘Hook a Duck’ game at the Show, which this year helped raise £12,500 for the Show’s beneficiary charity, the British Red Cross.

Every year the duck has a new look and many islanders collect the different editions. This year’s duck featured a British Red Cross inspired design to mark the 70th anniversary of Liberation Day, while the 2014 duck wore a Royal Marine beret to mark the 350th anniversary of the Royal Marines. This is the first year the public have been invited to contribute their own design.

Paul Savery, managing director of Barclays in Jersey, said: “We are really thrilled with the rainbow design; it is so bright and colourful. It was brilliant to hear how Holly and her Brownies group became involved in designing their Ducks and using the game to raise even more money for the Red Cross. We are all looking forward to seeing the rainbow duck for the first time at next year’s show.”
